Vancouver to Victoria in a day

Victoria and the Butchart Gardens in one day from Vancouver is possible, popular and long. Here is how the day really runs, what you get to see and who is better off staying the night.

Victoria is not a district of Vancouver. It is the capital of British Columbia, on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, and there is no bridge. Every "bus tour" to Victoria is really a coach, a BC Ferries crossing and another coach, and the Butchart Gardens sit north of the city in Brentwood Bay, not downtown.

That is why the day is long: about 13 hours door to door, around three of them on ferries. It is still the most popular day trip from Vancouver, and guests keep calling it long but worth it. This guide explains the timings so you can decide with your eyes open.

The quick answer

Yes, for most first-time visitors: a day tour gets you the ferry through the Gulf Islands, 2 to 3 hours in downtown Victoria and 1.5 to 2 hours in the Butchart Gardens, with the ferry and garden ticket included. Expect 12 to 14 hours, pickups from about 7:30 AM and a return around 9 to 10 PM. Lunch and tips are extra. If you want a slow day, stay a night instead.

Is a day trip from Vancouver to Victoria worth it?

Yes, if you accept a 13-hour day: you see a harbour city and one of the world's best-known gardens without renting a car or booking ferries.

Reviews on the tours we compare are overwhelmingly positive, and the most repeated line is some version of "long day, but worth it". The complaints are almost all about time: one Landsea guest wanted more time at the gardens, and a mini-coach guest who hit a slow day felt the hours in Victoria were cut short. If either of those would spoil your day, read the section on staying overnight below.

How does the day work, hour by hour?

Morning pickup, a 1 hour 35 minute ferry, a few hours on the island split between Victoria and the gardens, then the evening ferry back.

  • 7:30 to 9:00 AM: pickup downtown (Landsea asks you to be at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver at 7:35 or 8:35 AM, depending on the departure).
  • About 40 minutes: the drive south to the Tsawwassen terminal.
  • 1 hour 35 minutes: the crossing to Swartz Bay through the Gulf Islands.
  • Midday to late afternoon: Victoria and the Butchart Gardens, in one order or the other.
  • Evening: the ferry back and the drive into Vancouver, arriving around 9 to 10 PM.

How much time do you actually get in Victoria and at the gardens?

About 2 to 3 hours in downtown Victoria and 1.5 to 2 hours in the Butchart Gardens, depending on the tour.

Landsea gives about 3 hours in Victoria and 1.5 hours in the gardens; gardens-first tours such as the Westcoast Sightseeing day trip give about 2 hours in each. That is enough for the Sunken, Rose and Japanese gardens at a steady pace, and for two or three sights in Victoria. See what to see in Victoria in a day for ready-made plans.

What do you see on the ferry?

The crossing threads through the forested Gulf Islands, and guests report eagles and, now and then, whales from the deck.

The coach drives onto the ferry and you are free to walk the ship, find a seat by the window or stand on deck. It is BC Ferries' busiest route, with food counters and shops on board, and buying lunch here saves your time on land for sightseeing. Bring a layer: it is breezy on deck, even in summer.

What does a day trip cost, and is it cheaper to go alone?

Day tours run from $162 to $257 per adult in USD with the ferry and garden ticket included; doing it yourself is not much cheaper for one or two people.

Alone as a foot passenger, you pay the ferry fare of C$21 each way (April 2026, at the terminal), garden admission (C$36.75 in October 2026, C$44.25 in summer) and transit at both ends, which turns the day into a long relay of buses. A car suits a group of three or four, but the vehicle fare was C$89 each way in April 2026 on top of each passenger's fare. Tours sell the logistics, not a discount.

Gardens first or Victoria first: which is better?

Gardens first gets you there fresh and earlier; Victoria first gives you more city time at lunch and the gardens in the late afternoon.

One STAR Sightseeing guest found the gardens fairly quiet and easy to walk round at the end of the day; others were tired by then. Pick by what matters more. The full breakdown, tour by tour, is in Victoria and Butchart tours compared.

Prefer the gardens while you are fresh? The gardens-first day trip gives about two hours in each place.

Who should stay overnight in Victoria instead?

Anyone who wants more than two hours in the gardens, the summer fireworks, a slow afternoon tea, or a day that does not start at 7:30 AM.

Split it: take the coach and ferry transfer ($66 one way, ferry fare included) to downtown Victoria, spend the afternoon in the city, then join the Butchart tour from Victoria ($105) the next day for about 2.5 hours in the gardens. Families should note that tour does not carry small children, because of car seat rules.

How do you make the long day easier?

Eat breakfast early, buy lunch on the morning ferry, plan Victoria before you go, and wear comfortable shoes.

  • Pick two or three sights for Victoria in advance; free time goes fast.
  • Carry layers and a light rain jacket for the deck and the gardens.
  • Bring a charging cable: guests note you can charge devices on the ferry.
  • Ask whether your coach has a restroom if it matters to you.
  • Budget for lunch and a tip for your driver-guide.

How long is the Vancouver to Victoria day trip?

About 12 to 14 hours door to door. Pickups start around 7:30 AM and most tours are back in Vancouver between about 9 and 10 PM.

Can you drive from Vancouver to Victoria?

Not all the way: Victoria is on Vancouver Island, so you drive onto a BC Ferries sailing from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, which takes 1 hour 35 minutes.

Is lunch included on Victoria day tours?

No. None of the day tours from Vancouver include lunch. Two budget tours add snacks and bottled water.

Is one day enough for Victoria?

It is enough for a first look: the Inner Harbour, a couple of sights and the Butchart Gardens. For museums, afternoon tea or the summer fireworks, stay at least one night.
